JOHANNESBURG ZOO MURALS

PARTICIPATION DESIGN

This project is based on the role that human-centred graphic design can have within a variety of projects in and around Johannesburg, South Africa. In the first week, I was introduced to a small number of stakeholders and have chosen to work with the Joburg Zoo. My project is on the interactive mural design for the Education Centre. For this project, I designed the interactive wall murals for the Rhino, Buffalo, and Elephant room. This project required me to develop original, creative concepts that will help and strengthen the client’s end goals.

CREATIVE CONCEPT

Design fun and creative murals that can captivate children and create a space that makes them inquisitive about animals. Make use of games that are animal related that can be a fun learning experience for children. I make use of the following key words as a way to guide my designs to reach these goals:

BUFFALO ROOM

Wall 1 & 2 in the Buffalo room will be an interactive mural. Children will ‘spot the difference’ between the two walls. There are 5 differences that children can identify.

Wall 3 will be an interactive wall mural with a whiteboard. The game is ‘Categories’, where children write down the names of animals around a certain theme. The first letter is already given and there will be clues in the murals for children to identify. This is put onto a whiteboard and is multi-functional as presenters in meetings can use it as well.

RHINO ROOM

Wall 4 is information and interesting facts about rhinos.

Wall 5 is a word search with clues related to rhinos on the right. This is put onto a whiteboard which means it can be used in conference meetings if they need it.

Wall 6 in the elephant room has two interactive mural designs on it. The first on the right is a way for children to measure what percent of elephant they are, sort of like measuring their height in relation to an elephant’s. The second is a map of South Africa and children can mark where they can find African Bush Elephants. The hints are shown on the map by looking at the names.
The windows will have an animal almost peaking through the window. Like the animal is inside of the admin rooms looking inside the elephant room.

There is also facts about elephants on both walls 6 and 7. Wall 6 is interesting facts. Wall 7 gives information about elephant poaching and why they are endangered.

This is the concept of ceiling and floor interactive designs in the elephant room. Birds (that are actually found in the savanna) hang from the ceiling are found and visitors can pull the string to emulate the birds flying. The interactive floor mural allows children to compare their feet to the elephant’s.
